Is dental treatment in Turkey safe? What the register can and cannot tell you

There are two questions inside that one, and they have different answers.

The first is: is this facility allowed to treat patients who travel to Türkiye for care? That is checkable. It is public. It is documented.

The second is: is this clinic good at dentistry? No register answers that. Not the Turkish one, not any other. We will not pretend otherwise, and the reason is worth your time.

What the authorisation actually is

Turkish law requires a facility to hold an International Health Tourism Authorisation before it may treat patients who travel to Türkiye for care. That is the whole of it. The authorisation is an administrative permission, not a clinical rating. It says a facility met the conditions to be listed. It does not say the veneers will fit, the implants will integrate, or the dentist has done a thousand of these.

There are 4,403 facilities currently holding that authorisation. Of those, 1,245 are dental facilities. The register covers 62 provinces and records 29,099 doctors. It is a large list, and it is a list of permissions.

What you can check before you pay a deposit

You can check whether a named facility appears on the register, and you can read the document behind that entry. That is the point of check a specific clinic — it shows the licence and publishes the paperwork, not an opinion.

You can also see what the facility itself declared. The register records which treatments a facility declared, not how well it performs them. Across the register, 587 distinct treatments appear. If you are weighing dental implant surgery, you can confirm the facility listed it. You cannot confirm from the register that it does it well.

Some practical entries are worth knowing. 2,101 listed facilities are in İstanbul and 507 are in Antalya, so if you are comparing quotes from clinics in Antalya, you are looking at a substantial cluster, not a handful. 4,330 facilities list English among the languages their staff speak. 243 facilities have a named accreditation on the official record — a minority, and a fact, not a verdict.

What the register cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether the dentist is skilled. It cannot tell you whether the clinic is honest about what a crown will cost after the quote. It cannot tell you whether complications are handled well, or whether the aftercare exists once you are home.

None of that is a gap in this register specifically. It is a gap in registers. A licence is issued on administrative conditions. Quality of care is not one of them, and no document we publish changes that.

So when someone asks us whether a clinic is good, we decline to answer. That refusal is the useful part. If a directory tells you a clinic is good, ask what it measured. If the answer is "it holds a licence", it has told you nothing about the dentistry.

What the documents are for

healthturkey.co mirrors 6,402 official PDF documents and publishes each with its SHA-256 hash. The hash is a fingerprint of the file. If the document changes, the fingerprint changes. You can compare what you were shown with what is on the record.

We take no fee from any clinic and book nothing. That is deliberate. A directory paid by the clinics it lists has a reason to blur the two questions above. We would rather keep them apart.

One caution about absence

A facility missing from the register is not proven to be unlicensed. It may be registered under a different legal name or spelling. Clinics trade under names that differ from their registered entity, and transliteration varies. Before drawing a conclusion from a blank search result, work through how to verify a licence, which sets out what to match and what to ask the clinic for.

The register tells you a facility is permitted. It does not tell you it is good. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

Use the register for what it does. Confirm the facility is authorised before you commit money. Read the document. Check the declared treatments include the procedure you are buying. Then do the rest the way you would at home: ask who will perform the work, ask what happens if a complication appears after you fly back, and get the answers in writing.

That is the honest split. One half is a public record you can verify today. The other half is a judgement no directory can make for you, and we will not pretend to make it.
